Pill Bugs

What are Pill Bugs?

Pill bugs, also known as roly-polies or Armadillidiidae, are small, armored crustaceans commonly found in damp, dark environments. They have a distinctive, segmented, oval-shaped body that is gray to dark brown and can roll into a tight ball when disturbed—a defense mechanism against predators. Typically measuring about ¼ to ½ inch long, pill bugs have seven pairs of legs and two short antennae. While not harmful to humans, pets, or structures, pill bugs can become nuisance pests when they wander into homes, basements, or garages, especially during wet or cool weather. Outdoors, they feed on decaying organic matter, but indoors they usually die off quickly due to lack of moisture and food. Large numbers indoors may indicate excess moisture or poor sealing, making them a useful sign of underlying moisture issues.

Prevention Methods

Preventing pill bug pests (roly-polies) in Utah focuses on reducing moisture, eliminating hiding spots, and sealing off entry points to your home. Here are some effective prevention methods:

1. Eliminate Moisture

  • Fix leaky faucets, hoses, and irrigation systems near your home’s foundation.

  • Improve drainage around your house by directing downspouts and gutters away from the foundation.

  • Ventilate crawl spaces and use dehumidifiers in damp basements to keep indoor areas dry.

2. Reduce Outdoor Shelter

  • Remove leaf litter, mulch, grass clippings, and wood piles near the home.

  • Keep firewood and building materials stored off the ground and away from walls.

  • Avoid over-mulching flower beds, especially against foundations.

3. Seal Entry Points

  • Caulk cracks and gaps around doors, windows, pipes, and foundation walls.

  • Use weather stripping and door sweeps to close gaps under doors.

  • Repair or replace damaged screens on windows and vents.

4. Maintain Indoor Spaces

  • Vacuum or sweep up pill bugs immediately if they appear inside.

  • Reduce clutter and moisture in basements, laundry rooms, and garages.

  • Use sticky traps along baseboards to monitor activity if needed.

Pill bugs are generally harmless, but if you’re seeing a lot of them indoors, it’s often a sign of excess moisture or outdoor conditions that need attention.
